Company
MMF&HP is a multifaceted, small and owner operated organisation specializing in a number of Dietetics, Personal Training and Health Promotion services for women across the world, such as:
- Diet advice, including vitamin and mineral supplementation;
- Individual and group fitness programs that promote social connection and women in sport;
- Women’s health leadership training (for weight loss and chronic disease prevention);
- Workforce health promotion short courses for women;
- Free community seminars that promote grass roots health action, and new ideas for healthy eating and physical activity; and
- Volunteer Abroad Programs (VAP) that promote women’s nutritional and physical health in developing countries.
The programs offered by MMF&HP are progressive and aligned with an ecological approach to human health. They complement a set of underlying initiatives that support social change in the pursuit of non-communicable disease prevention and a new era in women’s health promotion.
History
MMF&HP was established in 2007 with a vision firmly focused on providing support specifically for women around the world, as a collective group of individuals, who are in greater need of help when it comes to their health. Specifically, it was established in response to the fact that that women are at greater risk of suffering from ill-health due to a number of gender inequalities that impact their ability to positively take control of their nutritional and physical health. In this sense it seeks to help women understand that there are a broader set of cultural and social pressures that may be impacting their health.
From this perspective MMF&HP has been developed to raise awareness of the notion that determinants in health are to a large extent beyond the control of the individual; and to change the way in which Dietetics, Personal Training and Health Promotion programs and services, particularly for women, are understood and delivered.
Shelly's Approach
I eat a wide variety foods, including dairy, fruits and vegetables in proportion with the right amount of whole grains, lean protein and fats, on a daily basis. I monitor my nutrition closely including my meal times to ensure I don't get hungry and that my body is always ready to train hard. I enlist the help of a close friend to help with my training to keep me focused and on track. I love to stay positive, use visualization and always aim to get at least 8 hours sleep each night. I do cardio 6 days per week and train with weights, with the aim to build muscle, 6 days per week, on a split rotation.
Shelly's Background
I have at various times in my life fallen victim to bulimia nervosa and 'yo yo' dieting. I now see these disordered eating patterns as the primary consequence of too strict a dieting. It has taken years of intentional effort, time and energy in seeking freedom from this, but the journey has confirmed the importance of a healthy attitude toward food, my body and my life.
Family & friends
I can never go without thanking the people in my life who have supported me in dealing with my debilitating obsessions with food, body weight and shape. My thanks also extend to my friends at the EDA (Eating Disorders Association Inc). I thank you all for being who you are and for being so patient with me.
"Shelly, I admire you for wanting to tackle your eating issues for the benefit of your health. Your potential as a role model for others is as important as being a sports model. Good luck with it all."
